Ascending Spiral
PROCESS
Large-scale installation, winner of the 2024 Call4Art Artistic Creation Award, organised by Fundação Oriente to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 25 April Revolution in Portugal.
Composed of 300 handmade crochet carnations in red and green cotton yarn, attached to an iron structure arranged in an ascending spiral, the installation explores freedom as an ongoing collective achievement. The carnations were made collaboratively by elderly residents from two social institutions in northern Portugal, bringing together different generations through a shared creative process.
The ascending spiral symbolises the positive impact of democracy and freedom on generations since the 1974 Revolution, while reflecting the continuous struggle to preserve and expand these values in contemporary society. By combining traditional craft, community participation and sculptural form, the work highlights solidarity, intergenerational exchange and collective responsibility as essential elements in the construction and maintenance of freedom.
